damm, it was NOT a good idea to update the firmware and Ovi Maps today.

Out of interest, does Ovi Maps allow you to download area maps and then just use the GPS to navigate that area instead of requiring a data connection (unlike Google Maps which definitely requires a data connection).
I'm just thinking of the possible usefulness of having GPS when on holiday in Italy later this month, but definitely wouldn't want to be using roaming data for downloading maps as I'd cost myself hugely.
The firmware update went ok, at least it did once i realised that WinXP under VMWare makes my modern Unix Workstation kind of like and old DOS box i.e it can only run one program, don't touch anything, or it will all go wrong(kept loosing the USB connection :( )
Then the supper slow Ovi Maps updater, seems to have inherited the same random number generator that microsoft uses in it's progress bars.
@alexleonard: yep, you can pre-load the relavent country maps to a Memory card (all of Europe is about 1.5GB). There is potentially a small (1k?) for the assisted part to get the faster GPS lock, but other than that there should be no data connections.
depending on your handset's firmware, V2 might already be on there :)
Actually the previous V3 beta was not too bad. Some relatively major display issues on E90 internal screen, but then E90 was not on list of compatible devices :)
I'm restricted by stupid Meteor Ireland from updating to the latest firmware. I have to do some stuff suggested by @gerrymoth to change my product code and that will allow me to update my firmware. I think I'm about 10 versions behind. Retarded.
I'm on an E71 and I don't think it came with Maps pre-installed but we'll soon see to that ;)
Aye, I'd love to hack the product code and actually get the latest firmware, but I'm thinking I'll do that when i get back from holidays :)
It's frustrating that the service provider locks things down to not allow firmware updates, hence somewhat reducing the potential functionality/stability of the phone.
actually once installed the new ovi maps 3 is rather good. Helped when i missed the exit due to confusion between where i thought i was, and where i actually was.

So I might stay away from the beta and just install v2?

@alexleonard: before "hacking" the product code, see if Maps will install (can't see any reason it would not)

The speed limit "dohickey" is also kind of cool.

oh and i posted a picture to my ovi share public channel if anyone is bored, and wants to see why the Finns head out of the city for midsummer :)

If i do end up staying in finland, i might get a cottage first before getting my own house/apartment etc. Thanks @ymb

ditto here. Had an amazing time and I understand now Finns are so particular about their summer cottages.
