@alexleonard: before "hacking" the product code, see if Maps will install (can't see any reason it would not)
-
@alexleonard: yep, you can pre-load the relavent country maps to a Memory card (all of Europe is about 1.5GB). There is potentially a small (1k?) for the assisted part to get the faster GPS lock, but other than that there should be no data connections.
BTW, i am complaining about Ovi Maps 3 BETA :)
-
The firmware update went ok, at least it did once i realised that WinXP under VMWare makes my modern Unix Workstation kind of like and old DOS box i.e it can only run one program, don't touch anything, or it will all go wrong(kept loosing the USB connection :( )
Then the supper slow Ovi Maps updater, seems to have inherited the same random number generator that microsoft uses in it's progress bars.

@eduardoresende: yes, Jaiku is owned by Google, but as a business they have to look at things and judge what return on the investment made they are getting.
I would guess that the cost for google (once the SMS part is removed) for hosting Jaiku is almost zero. As it then comes down to some server infra for the AppEngine and DB space?
But the things they get in return are -
They have a real world use of App Engine that they can get usage information from
that as one of the original MicroBlogging platforms, a user community, with experience
an insight/seat at the table on Microblogging federation discussions
Remember, these are my guesses, I don't work for google or have any inside knowledge of their thinking.
